Eye Care Tips

Our Eye Trend and Master Vision professionals present the following eye care tips, which may help to prevent or reduce eyestrains and tiredness.

1. Keep your computer screen approximately 50-60cm from your eyes and hold any reading material at least 40cm away from your eyes, under good lighting.

2. While working at your desk, give your eyes a break every so often, you can achieve this by changing your focus from what is in front of you to a distant object at least 3 metres away.

Eye Exercises

Eye exercises are a means of relieving temporary eyestrain induced by prolonged periods of focused work. The following eye exercises will greatly benefit those who spend long hours on the computer or reading. (Please ensure your hands are clean (ie.washed hands), prior to attempting these eye exercises. Please do not apply any pressure to your eye while performing the following suggested exercises).

Exercise One:

RHYTHMIC EYE MOVEMENTS

1. Keeping your head still, sit upright and look forward.

2. Try to look up as high as possible without going any further than your eyes want to go, then look down. Repeat 10 times and rest for 30 seconds.

3. Like step one, keep your head still and look right as far as possible, then left. Repeat 10 times and rest for 30 seconds.

4. Roll your eyes clockwise, then counter-clockwise.

Repeat these step five times, blinking in between each set.

Exercise Two:

Burning, gritty and teary eyes are usually the symptoms of dry eyes, commonly experienced by computer users, contact lens wearers, the elderly, and those constantly exposed to dry air and wind. Unfortunately, there is no cure for dry eyes; but the symptoms can be better managed. Staring at the computer screen or reading can reduce our blinking rate from 10 to 2-3 times per minute, thus causing dry eyes. The solution is to simply blink more often, which also aids in changing your focus regularly. Lubricant eye drops, gels and ointments can also help to relieve dry eye symptoms.

One of the common causes of dry eyes is the clogging up of oil-producing glands on the eyelids that help to prevent the tear layer from evaporating quickly. An easy way to solve this problem is to perform warm compresses.

First, soak a clean towel in warm water. Squeeze out the excess water.

Then close your eyes and gently use your palm to hold the warm towel over your eyes for 5 minutes. Do not apply pressure on the eye. Repeat this procedure for the other eye.
